이사야 Chapter 45

Translation: ESV

1

Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped, to subdue nations before him and to loose the belts of kings, to open doors before him that gates may not be closed.

Key Message

God anoints and uses even a Gentile to accomplish his purposes.

Cyrus is called 'his anointed one (Messiah/mashiakh).

Cyrus is called 'his anointed one (Messiah/mashiakh).' A title previously used only for Israel's kings and priests is applied to a foreign king. This is a shocking declaration. God can use anyone to accomplish his purposes.

5

I am the LORD, and there is no other, besides me there is no God; I equip you, though you do not know me.

Key Message

God uses even someone who does not know him to accomplish his purposes.

'There is no other besides me'—one of the strongest declarations of monotheism.

7

I form light and create darkness; I make well-being and create calamity; I am the LORD, who does all these things.

Key Message

God is the Creator of all things, and dualism is false.

God creates both light and darkness, well-being and calamity.

9

Woe to him who strives with him who formed him, a pot among earthen pots! Does the clay say to him who forms it, 'What are you making?' or 'Your work has no handles'?

Key Message

The creature cannot question the Creator's purpose.

The parable of the potter and clay: the created thing cannot argue with the Creator asking why he was made this way.

22

Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.

Key Message

Salvation is God's invitation to the whole world, not only to Israel.

'All the ends of the earth'—salvation is directed not only at Israel but at the whole world.

23

By myself I have sworn; from my mouth has gone out in righteousness a word that shall not return: 'To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear allegiance.'

Key Message

On the last day every being will bow the knee before God.

'Every knee shall bow to me and every tongue shall swear allegiance'—an eschatological declaration.
