이사야 Chapter 34

Translation: ESV

1

Draw near, O nations, to hear, and give attention, O peoples! Let the earth hear, and all that fills it; the world, and all that comes from it.

Key Message

God's judgment is directed at all the nations, and no one can escape this declaration.

The beginning of a declaration of judgment against all the world.

The beginning of a declaration of judgment against all the world. Nations, peoples, the earth, the world—all must hear God's declaration of judgment. Chapter 34 addresses the judgment on Edom and the nations.

2

For the LORD is enraged against all the nations, and furious against all their host; he has devoted them to destruction, has given them over for slaughter.

Key Message

God's justice ultimately appears as the final judgment on all evil.

God's wrath is directed against all the nations.

4

All the host of heaven shall rot away, and the skies roll up like a scroll. All their host shall fall, as leaves fall from the vine, like leaves falling from the fig tree.

Key Message

God's final judgment is an event that shakes the entire cosmic order.

Judgment on a cosmic scale is depicted.

5

For my sword has drunk its fill in the heavens; behold, it descends for judgment upon Edom, upon the people I have devoted to destruction.

Key Message

God's enemies, especially those who have harmed his people, will certainly face judgment.

The LORD's sword descends on Edom.

8

For the LORD has a day of vengeance, a year of recompense for the cause of Zion.

Key Message

God repays the wrongs done to his people; the day of vengeance and the time of recompense will surely come.

The LORD's day of vengeance—this is God's just judgment.

9

And the streams of Edom shall be turned into pitch, and her soil into sulfur; her land shall become burning pitch.

Key Message

A land under God's judgment becomes an eternal desolation like Sodom.

Edom becomes a land burning with sulfur and pitch, like Sodom and Gomorrah.

10

Night and day it shall not be quenched; its smoke shall go up forever. From generation to generation it shall lie waste; none shall pass through it forever and ever.

Key Message

God's eternal judgment persists like an unquenchable fire.

The fire is not quenched and the smoke goes up forever.

11

But the hawk and the porcupine shall possess it, the owl and the raven shall dwell in it. He shall stretch the line of confusion over it, and the plumb line of emptiness.

Key Message

God's judgment is an un-creation reversing creation, and this is the ultimate consequence of sin.

'The line of confusion and the plumb line of emptiness'—tohu (confusion) and bohu (emptiness) from Genesis 1:2 are used directly.

16

Seek and read from the book of the LORD: Not one of these shall be missing; none shall be without her mate. For the mouth of the LORD has commanded, and his Spirit has gathered them.

Key Message

God's word is complete; confirmed by his Spirit, it will surely come to pass.

'Seek and read from the book of the LORD'—this is the verse in Isaiah most strongly emphasizing the authority of Scripture.

17

He has cast the lot for them; his hand has portioned it out to them with the line; they shall possess it forever; from generation to generation they shall dwell in it.

Key Message

Even God's judgment is within his sovereign plan, and his word will surely come to pass.

That wild animals shall dwell in Edom forever is what God has directly ordained.
