이사야 Chapter 32

Translation: ESV

1

Behold, a king will reign in righteousness, and princes will rule in justice.

Key Message

Isaiah's messianic hope is the coming of a king who reigns in righteousness.

A messianic prophecy.

A messianic prophecy. 'A king who will reign in righteousness'—this is the king who will perfectly accomplish what Israel's kings failed to do. When this king comes, princes also rule in justice.

2

Each will be like a hiding place from the wind, a shelter from the storm, like streams of water in a dry place, like the shade of a great rock in a weary land.

Key Message

The righteous king becomes a refuge protecting the people from every danger.

The protection the righteous king will offer is depicted in beautiful natural imagery: a hiding place from wind, shelter from storm, streams of water in a dry place, shade of rock—protection from danger, thirst, and heat respectively.

3

Then the eyes of those who see will not be closed, and the ears of those who hear will give attention.

Key Message

Under the Messiah's reign, spiritual blindness is healed and one can see truth.

This is the reversal of 29:10 where eyes were closed and ears were stopped.

4

The heart of the hasty will understand and know, and the tongue of the stammerers will hasten to speak distinctly.

Key Message

The Messiah's reign restores spiritual, intellectual, and physical wholeness to humanity.

Those who were hasty and lacking in discernment will learn knowledge.

5

The fool will no more be called noble, nor the scoundrel said to be honorable.

Key Message

In God's kingdom, the distorted value standards of the world are set right.

Under the righteous king's reign, the social standards of value change.

6

For the fool speaks folly, and his heart is busy with iniquity, to practice ungodliness, to utter error concerning the LORD, to leave the craving of the hungry unsatisfied, and to deprive the thirsty of drink.

Key Message

Foolish and greedy leaders harm both God and the poor simultaneously.

The characteristics of the fool are listed: foolish speech, doing iniquity, speaking wrongly about the LORD, exploiting the poor.

7

As for the scoundrel—his devices are evil; he plans wicked schemes to ruin the poor with lying words, even when the plea of the needy is right.

Key Message

The cunning language of the powerful becomes the instrument that robs the poor of justice.

The weapon of the scoundrel is lying words.

8

But he who is noble plans noble things, and on noble things he stands.

Key Message

True nobility lies not in social rank but in noble plans and their execution.

The noble is contrasted with the fool.

9

Rise up, you women who are at ease, hear my voice; you complacent daughters, give ear to my speech.

Key Message

Ignoring social responsibility amid luxury and ease is a cause of judgment.

A warning is directed at Jerusalem's complacent women.

10

In little more than a year you will shudder, you complacent women; for the grape harvest fails, the fruit harvest will not come.

Key Message

Judgment comes with a specific time and means, stripping away prosperity.

In less than a year there will be no grape harvest and no fruit.

15

Until the Spirit is poured upon us from on high, and the wilderness becomes a fruitful field, and the fruitful field is deemed a forest.

Key Message

The outpouring of the Spirit is the driving force of restoration that transforms both nature and society.

After judgment, the age of restoration comes with the Spirit poured out.

16

Then justice will dwell in the wilderness, and righteousness abide in the fruitful field.

Key Message

The Spirit's work brings both natural restoration and social justice together.

As a result of the Spirit's outpouring, justice and righteousness take hold throughout society.

17

And the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever.

Key Message

True peace comes from justice and righteousness. Peace built on injustice is false peace.

The fruit of righteousness is peace.

18

My people will abide in a peaceful habitation, in secure dwellings, and in quiet resting places.

Key Message

The peace God gives is a peaceful habitation, secure dwellings, and quiet resting places.

The ideal dwelling place of God's people is described: a peaceful habitation, secure dwellings, quiet resting places.
