Then Joseph brought in Jacob his father and stood him before Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.

God's covenant people stand as channels of the blessing God has given them even before worldly power, and true authority comes from relationship with God.

The elderly Jacob stands before Pharaoh, the absolute power of a foreign land, and 'blesses Pharaoh.

And Jacob said to Pharaoh, 'The days of the years of my sojourning are 130 years. Few and evil have been the days of the years of my life, and they have not attained to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their sojourning.'

Key Message

Because a person of faith knows he is a sojourner on this earth, he can view even difficult years from an eternal perspective.

Jacob describes his own life as 'sojourning.

Thus Israel settled in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen. And they gained possessions in it, and were fruitful and multiplied greatly.

God faithfully fulfills His promise even in a foreign land, and a place of hardship can become a land of great blessing.

And when the time drew near that Israel must die, he called his son Joseph and said to him, 'If now I have found favor in your sight, put your hand under my thigh and promise to deal kindly and truly with me. Do not bury me in Egypt,

Key Message

Maintaining faith in the promised land even in the face of death is the ultimate confession of faith.

Facing death, Jacob earnestly asks Joseph to bury him in Canaan.
