Joseph devises a plan to put the silver cup in Benjamin's sack.

Joseph devises a plan to put the silver cup in Benjamin's sack. This is the device for the final test — whether the brothers will abandon Benjamin and save only themselves, or sacrifice themselves for Benjamin. Joseph's plan is the final test for reconciliation.

16

Judah said, 'What shall we say to my lord? What shall we speak? Or how can we clear ourselves? God has found out the guilt of your servants; behold, we are my lord's servants, both we and he also in whose hand the cup has been found.'

Key Message

Genuine repentance is shown in acknowledging one's own sin as something God has brought to light and confessing willingness to bear the consequences.

Judah's statement 'God has found out the guilt of your servants' is interpreted not merely as referring to the silver cup incident, but as pointing to the sin of selling Joseph twenty years earlier.

Now therefore, please let your servant remain instead of the boy as a servant to my lord, and let the boy go back with his brothers.

Key Message

Judah's substitutionary self-sacrifice prefigures the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, and love that gives itself for another is the heart of all reconciliation.

Judah volunteers to become a slave in place of Benjamin.
