창세기 Chapter 40

Translation: ESV

1

Some time after this, the cupbearer of the king of Egypt and his baker committed an offense against their lord the king of Egypt.

Key Message

God's providence works out His plan with precision through events that appear to be mere coincidences.

Two of Pharaoh's senior officials are imprisoned, and this becomes the decisive occasion for Joseph to stand before Pharaoh.

Two of Pharaoh's senior officials are imprisoned, and this becomes the decisive occasion for Joseph to stand before Pharaoh. The cupbearer held an honored position as one of the king's closest confidants in the ancient Near East. The imprisonment of these two men is yet another link in the chain of God's providence.

8

They said to him, 'We have had dreams, and there is no one to interpret them.' And Joseph said to them, 'Do not interpretations belong to God? Please tell them to me.'

Key Message

The essence of spiritual humility is attributing the source of true wisdom and insight not to one's own ability but to God.

Joseph attributes the source of dream interpretation to God.

14

Only remember me, when it is well with you, and please do me the kindness to mention me to Pharaoh, and so get me out of this house.

Key Message

Trusting in God does not mean abandoning human means; it means humbly using every available method while waiting for God's timing.

Joseph asks the cupbearer to remember him — a natural human action of seeking assistance.

23

Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him.

Key Message

People may forget, but God does not, and in every season of waiting there is a greater plan of God.

The cupbearer, restored to his post through Joseph's help, forgets Joseph.
