출애굽기 Chapter 33

Translation: ESV

3

Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey; but I will not go up among you, lest I consume you on the way, for you are a stiff-necked people.

Key Message

Material blessing without God's presence is not true blessing—God's presence itself is the greatest blessing.

God promises the land to Israel but declares 'I will not go up among you.

God promises the land to Israel but declares 'I will not go up among you.' This is the most severe judgment—he will give material blessing but withdraw his presence. This declaration paradoxically reveals that true blessing lies not in the land but in God's presence.

11

Thus the LORD used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.

Key Message

Intimate relationship with God is formed through prayer, and dwelling in God's presence is the heart of faith.

The expression 'face to face, as a man speaks to his friend' reveals the uniqueness of Moses' relationship with God.

13

Now therefore, if I have found favor in your sight, please show me your ways, that I may know you in order to find favor in your sight. Consider too that this nation is your people.

Key Message

True prayer desires to know God himself more deeply, and knowing God is the source of all blessing.

Moses' prayer is remarkable.

18

Moses said, 'Please show me your glory.'

Key Message

The ultimate goal of the journey of faith is to see God's glory, and this longing is the driving force of worship and prayer.

Moses' prayer reaches its climax: 'Show me your glory.

19

And he said, 'I will make all my goodness pass before you and will proclaim before you my name "The LORD." And I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.'

Key Message

God's glory is revealed in his goodness, grace, and mercy, and this grace flows from God's sovereign love.

God reveals his glory as 'his goodness' and 'his name.

20

But he said, 'You cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.'

Key Message

God's holiness is something sinful humanity cannot directly bear, and we can only approach God through a mediator.

God's full glory cannot be seen directly by sinful humanity.
