Then bring near to you Aaron your brother, and his sons with him, from among the people of Israel, to serve me as priests—Aaron and Aaron's sons, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

Key Message

Because God himself selects and appoints priests, the ministry of mediation is grounded in God's grace.

And you shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for beauty.

Serving God is glorious and beautiful, reflecting God's holiness.

The priestly vestments are not mere ceremonial robes but garments of theological significance expressing 'holiness,' 'glory,' and 'beauty.

They shall make the ephod of gold, of blue and purple and scarlet yarns, and of fine twined linen, skillfully worked.

Key Message

The service of God demands the use of the finest materials and skills, expressing the value of that service.

The ephod is one of the most important garments worn by the high priest, skillfully made of gold thread and four different colored yarns.

You shall make a breastpiece of judgment, in skilled work. In the style of the ephod you shall make it—of gold, blue and purple and scarlet yarns, and fine twined linen shall you make it.

Key Message

The high priest was an intercessor who carried all Israel on his chest when approaching God.

The breastpiece of judgment was a pouch used to hold the Urim and Thummim when the high priest inquired of God's will.

So Aaron shall bear the names of the sons of Israel in the breastpiece of judgment on his heart, when he goes into the Holy Place, to bring them to regular remembrance before the LORD.

Key Message

Jesus Christ is the eternal high priest who presents our names in remembrance before God.

When the high priest entered the Holy Place, he carried the names of the twelve tribes on his chest.

You shall make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it, like the engraving of a signet, 'Holy to the LORD.'

Key Message

God's people are called to live with the identity of 'Holy to the LORD.'

The gold plate attached to the front of the high priest's turban was engraved with the inscription 'Holy to the LORD' (Qodesh laYHWH).

It shall be on Aaron's forehead, and Aaron shall bear any guilt from the holy things that the people of Israel consecrate as their holy gifts. It shall regularly be on his forehead, that they may be accepted before the LORD.

Key Message

Just as the high priest bore the people's guilt so their offerings could be accepted, Christ bears our guilt so that we ourselves may be accepted before God.

The high priest bore the guilt associated with any imperfections in the offerings brought by the people.
