신명기 Chapter 30

Translation: ESV

1

And when all these things come upon you, the blessing and the curse, which I have set before you, and you call them to heart among all the nations where the LORD your God has driven you,

Key Message

Even in the midst of judgment and suffering, turning back toward God opens the way of restoration.

The remarkable promise of restoration upon repentance during exile begins here.

The remarkable promise of restoration upon repentance during exile begins here. Even after the curses have come, the door of repentance remains open. God's judgment is never the final word.

3

then the LORD your God will restore your fortunes and have mercy on you, and he will gather you again from all the peoples where the LORD your God has scattered you.

Key Message

Salvation begins with God's initiative of compassion; it is possible for us to be restored because he first turns toward us.

The remarkable expression that God himself first turns—'the LORD will restore'—shows that Israel's restoration begins not merely from human repentance but from God's initiative of compassion.

6

And the LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your offspring, so that you will love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, that you may live.

Key Message

True inner transformation is possible only through the circumcision of the heart that God performs—the work of the Holy Spirit—not through human effort.

Circumcision of the heart means internal transformation—a new heart.

11

For this commandment that I command you today is not too hard for you, neither is it far off.

Key Message

God's word and will are neither far nor impossible; they are near enough to our mouth to make obedience possible.

This is a declaration that God's word is not far or impossible but near and accessible.

14

But the word is very near you. It is in your mouth and in your heart, so that you can do it.

Key Message

When the word is internalized in the heart, true obedience becomes possible—this is the promise of the new covenant.

The expression that God's word is in the mouth and in the heart shows that the word must be internalized.

15

See, I have set before you today life and good, death and evil.

Key Message

God does not compel; he makes the choices and their consequences clearly known, granting freedom alongside responsibility.

This is the declaration that two paths—life and death—lie before Israel.

19

I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live,

Key Message

God earnestly desires that we choose life, and that life consists of loving, trusting, and cleaving to God himself.

This is one of the most central verses in Deuteronomy: God calls heaven and earth as witnesses and urgently appeals to Israel to choose life.

20

loving the LORD your God, obeying his voice and holding fast to him, for he is your life and length of days, that you may dwell in the land that the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

Key Message

To choose life is to choose God himself; true life exists within a relationship with God.

This is the specific content of 'choosing life.
