신명기 Chapter 27

Translation: ESV

1

Now Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying, 'Keep the whole commandment that I command you today.'

Key Message

The first priority in a new land must be to worship God and renew the covenant; establishing God's presence is foundational to everything else.

This is the command to write the law on stones at Mount Ebal and build an altar after entering Canaan.

This is the command to write the law on stones at Mount Ebal and build an altar after entering Canaan. It emphasizes that the first act upon setting foot in the new land must be worship and covenant renewal.

5

And there you shall build an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones. You shall wield no iron tool on them;

Key Message

Worship offered to God must be characterized by purity and simplicity, not by human artistry and display.

The command to build an altar with uncut natural stones embodies the principle that God's natural creation is more fitting for worship than human craftsmanship.

14

And the Levites shall declare to all the men of Israel in a loud voice:

Key Message

The covenant must be publicly confirmed, and each individual's agreement gives it its binding force.

This begins the list of twelve curses to be proclaimed on Mount Ebal.

26

'Cursed be anyone who does not confirm the words of this law by doing them.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'

Key Message

The law demands perfect obedience, and since no human can fulfill this, every person needs Christ the Savior who bore the curse on our behalf.

This is the final and most comprehensive of the twelve curses, a sweeping curse against anyone who does not keep the entire law.
