고린도전서 Chapter 5

Translation: ESV

1

It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father's wife.

Key Message

Grace does not justify sin; the church must exercise responsible discipline over serious moral sin.

There was a serious sexual immorality problem within the Corinthian church — an incestuous relationship that even pagans did not permit.

There was a serious sexual immorality problem within the Corinthian church — an incestuous relationship that even pagans did not permit. What was even more shocking is that the believers were apparently arrogant about it (v. 2). This reveals the danger when false grace is used to justify moral license.

6

Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump?

Key Message

Tolerating and boasting about sin is a dangerous attitude that causes sin to spread throughout the entire community.

The danger of tolerating sin is warned about through the parable of leaven.

11

But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one.

Key Message

Church discipline is directed at church members, not the world, and its purpose is not punishment but restoration.

Church discipline applies not to worldly people but to those who claim to be brothers.
